Moving house: How to protect floors & furniture

No day is as dangerous for floors as moving day – in the old home as well as the new. With a little preparation, both will survive the day unscathed.

Moving situation: protected floor, furniture on glides

Before moving: Secure walkways

The main walkways – hallway, door areas, stairs – experience more traffic on a moving day than in a whole year. Protective fleece or cardboard sheets on these routes prevent grit under shoe soles from turning into a grinding machine.

When carrying and setting down

  • Carry furniture instead of pushing – and where pushing is necessary: on glides or placed on blankets.
  • When setting down, pay attention to edges: A cabinet that lands on its edge will leave a pressure mark.
  • Remove old, dirty glides before moving – otherwise, embedded grit will scratch the new floor.

In the new home: the best time for glides

Never again will all furniture legs be as accessible as when moving in. Anyone who equips every piece of furniture with fresh felt glides before setting it up protects the new floor from day one – and saves themselves the later hassle of lifting cabinets and sofas.

Moving-in ritual: fresh glides under every piece of furniture – before it goes into its place.
