Which floor protector for which floor?
Parquet forgives different mistakes than tiles, and what protects vinyl can be a nuisance on carpet. An overview of all common floors – and which glider is the right choice for each.
Parquet and oiled wood
Real wood is the most sensitive and at the same time most valuable surface in the house. There's no getting around felt here: it distributes the load, glides quietly, and doesn't rub dirt into the surface. For oiled floors, it's worth regularly checking the gliders – embedded dirt particles in the felt can otherwise act like sandpaper.
Laminate
Laminate has a hard wear layer, but it's not invulnerable: punctual loads and constant pushing leave dull traffic lanes and scratches. Felt gliders prevent both; for very heavy furniture that is moved, PTFE gliders are the effortless alternative.
Vinyl, PVC and design floors
Soft elastic coverings need gliders with a large contact surface so that furniture legs do not permanently indent. Felt is safe here; with simple plastic gliders, there is a risk of discolouration and streaks depending on the material pairing – when in doubt, choose felt.
Tiles, Stone and Marble
The floor itself is robust – the problem is noise and force: chair scraping on tiles echoes through the entire apartment, and heavy furniture can hardly be moved on rough porcelain stoneware. Felt solves the noise problem, PTFE the force problem; treat marble like parquet – gently, because scratches in stone can only be repaired with professional effort.
Linoleum and Cork
Both are elastic and regenerate minor pressure marks – but only a soft glider helps against scratches and walking noises. Felt is the uncomplicated standard solution here.
And carpet?
On carpet, felt glides poorly and collects fibres. Here, smooth, hard gliders made of metal or plastic are the right choice – they glide over the pile instead of getting caught in it.
