Furniture Glides Buying Guide: find the right glide
Felt, PTFE, metal or plastic – which furniture glide suits your floor and your furniture? This guide leads you in three steps to the right choice: determine the floor, assess the load, choose the fastening.
Step 1: Start with the floor
The most important question is not about the furniture, but the floor. Delicate surfaces such as parquet, laminate or vinyl require a soft, gentle material – here, felt is the first choice: it glides quietly, reliably protects against scratches and picks up fine dirt instead of rubbing it across the floor.
On hard, robust floors such as tiles or stone, furniture can also be heavy – there, PTFE shows its strength: extremely smooth-gliding, even under high load. Metal glides are the robust solution for carpets, plastic glides the universal one for light furniture.
Step 2: Assess load and use
A dining chair is moved hundreds of times daily, a wardrobe almost never. The more frequent and heavier the movement, the more important gliding ability and a durable fastening become.
- Light furniture, rarely moved (side table, shelf): self-adhesive felt is sufficient.
- Chairs in constant use: felt with nail or screw – the mechanical fastening withstands constant sliding movement.
- Heavy furniture that needs to be moved (sofa, wardrobe): PTFE glides, on hard floors with very good gliding properties.
Step 3: Choose fastening
Self-adhesive is the quickest solution and reliably holds on clean, dry, grease-free surfaces – our acrylic adhesive is solvent-free and adheres to wood, plastic and metal. For hammering (nail) and screwing, choose these for solid wood legs and heavy use; push-on and cap solutions enclose the leg and fit snugly.
When in doubt: first protect the floor, then optimise comfort. A glide that is too hard on a delicate floor causes more damage than one that is too soft on a robust floor.
Direct material comparison
The table summarises which material is intended for what – ideal floors, load capacity, movability, noise level, fastening and price at a glance.
