Measuring felt pads & choosing the right size
The right size determines whether the glide performs its duty invisibly or protrudes unsightly. Here's how to measure correctly in one minute – even without calipers.
What exactly is measured?
Always measure the contact surface of the furniture leg – i.e., the cross-section where the leg touches the floor. For conical legs, this is the narrowest point at the bottom, not the leg's cross-section further up.
- Round leg: Measure diameter (Ø) across the centre.
- Can't use a ruler? Wrap a thread around the leg, measure the circumference and divide by 3.14 – this gives the diameter.
- Square leg: measure the edge length; for rectangles, both sides.
The rule of thumb: same size or minimally smaller
For felt pads: never let it protrude. Choose the glide to be the same size or one size smaller than the contact surface. A slightly smaller glide is invisible and still safely bears the load; a protruding edge not only looks unsightly but can also catch and detach when moved.

How to measure the right size
Measure the cross-section of the furniture leg. Rule of thumb: Choose a glide that is the same size or minimally smaller than the contact surface – this ensures the furniture stands securely and the floor remains protected. No diameter measurable?
