Protecting laminate: which glides really last?
Laminate is considered robust – until the first dull traffic lanes and scratches become visible. What matters for glides on laminate: adhesive strength, contact surface, and the correct size.
The wear layer is hard – but not infinitely so
The melamine resin surface of laminate can withstand a lot, but loses its shine under constant friction: dull areas appear where chairs are moved daily. Felt glides interrupt precisely this friction – the furniture slides on felt, not on the wear layer.
Why cheap glides come loose on laminate
Smooth laminate surfaces encourage more frequent and vigorous pushing of furniture – the shear forces on the adhesive are correspondingly high. Therefore, a high-quality adhesive (solvent-free acrylic adhesive on a clean, grease-free surface) and the correct size are crucial: a glide that is too small concentrates the load, while an overhanging one will buckle when pushed.
- Degrease and dry the underside of the leg before gluing.
- Choose glides the size of the leg or slightly smaller.
- For chairs in continuous use, switch to nail-on or screw-on fixings.
