Felt pads constantly detaching – Causes & Remedies
If felt pads keep detaching, it's almost never due to the felt itself – but rather the surface, the size, or the wrong type of fastening for the intended use.
Cause 1: the surface
Adhesive does not stick to dust, grease, silicone residues or old adhesive layers. Before attaching, thoroughly clean, degrease and dry the underside of the leg – only then will the acrylic adhesive develop its full strength.
Cause 2: the size
A glide that protrudes beyond the contact surface will catch at the edge when pushed and lever itself off piece by piece. Therefore: choose a size equal to or minimally smaller than the leg.
Cause 3: Shear forces in continuous use
Dining chairs are pushed dozens of times daily – over time, this fatigues any adhesive bond. For these pieces of furniture, glides with a nail or screw are the right choice: mechanically anchored, replaceable at any time.
When replacing, completely remove old adhesive residues – new adhesive on old adhesive adheres significantly worse.
