The Right Glides for Dining Chairs
No piece of furniture is moved as often as a dining chair. The demands on its glides are correspondingly high: quiet, floor-friendly – and above all, permanently attached.
The Requirements Profile
A dining chair is pushed thousands of times a year – every time you sit down and stand up. This is a constant load for glides and fastenings. Pure adhesive solutions are a compromise here, while nail-on and screw-on glides are the permanent solution.
Round, square, conical: size matters first
Chair legs are rarely straight – they often taper or are angled. Always measure the actual contact surface at the bottom of the leg: diameter for round, edge length for square, for angled legs the surface that actually touches the floor. The calculator below will then suggest the appropriate size.
Material by Floor Type
- Parquet, Laminate, Vinyl: Felt glides – quiet and gentle.
- Tiles: Felt to reduce noise; wool felt for maximum quiet.
- Carpet: smooth plastic or metal glides that slide over the pile.
How to measure the right size
Measure the cross-section of the furniture leg. Rule of thumb: Choose glides that are the same size or slightly smaller than the contact surface – this ensures the furniture stands securely and the floor remains protected. No diameter measurable? Measure the circumference – we'll convert it (Ø = circumference ÷ 3.14).
