Chairs scratching the floor – what to do?

Scratches around the dining table are the most common type of floor damage. The causes are almost always the same – and the solution can be implemented in ten minutes.

Dining chair with worn glide on scratched floor

Find the cause: look under the leg

Turn the chair over. In almost all cases, one of three scenarios will appear:

  • No glide at all – the bare leg stands on the floor.
  • Worn glide – the felt is worn through, the hard carrier or nail head scratches.
  • Dirty glide – grains of sand and grit are stuck in the felt and act like sandpaper.

The immediate solution

Completely remove old glide residues and adhesive, clean and degrease the underside of the leg, then attach new felt glides. For dining chairs in continuous use, glides with a nail or screw are recommended – they withstand constant sliding movements where adhesive-only solutions reach their limits.

Already have scratches? First, have the floor inspected, then install new glides – otherwise, the next chair will immediately undo the repair.

Done in ten minutes: new felt glides for all chairs – significantly cheaper than a floor repair.
